Grand Canyon Camping: Tips to Have a Grand Time

A visit to the state of Arizona won’t be complete without dropping by the famous Grand Canyon. If you plan to bring the family to this state for a camping trip, this place is one of the best choices to set up camp. Not only does Grand Canyon offer awe-inspiring views, it also has many campgrounds as well as hiking and backpacking trails for you to enjoy. Here are some tips on how to have a grand time in this part of Arizona.

Tip # 1 – Choose the right campground.

Below is a list of the campgrounds you can consider for your camping trip in the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

  • Mather Campground – This campground, operated by the National Park Service and located in the Grand Canyon Village, is open all year round for campers to enjoy. It offers tent and RV camping, although there are no hook ups available. It is best to get reservations early especially if you are planning to go anytime from March to November. You will be charged $18 for an overnight stay. You can have a maximum of 2 vehicles, 6 people and 3 tents. If you are coming with a large group, you would want to avail the group site, which is available at $50 per night. It allows a maximum of 50 people and three vehicles per group.
  • Desert View Campground – This one is open only from mid-May to mid-October. It is located 26 miles east of Grand Canyon Village. The cost of an overnight stay is $12, which allows a maximum of 2 vehicles, 6 people, and 3 tents. If you have pets, you can bring them but they must be leashed at all times.
  • Trailer Village – Situated adjacent to Mather Campground, this campground provides RV camping sites with hookups. You will be charged $25 per night, per site for two people. An additional of $2 is required for every additional person over the age of 16. Just like in the Desert View, pets are allowed but must be leashed at all times.
  • Ten-X Campground – Operated by the U.S. Forest Service, this campground is nestled 2 miles south of Tusayan and is open from May 1 to Sept 30. There are no hook-ups or showers available in this place but you can make use of the pit toilets and cold water faucets available. Charge of $10 per vehicle per night for a stay in this campground.
  • North Rim Campground – The North Rim Campground is open from mid-May to mid-October. It is operated by the National Park Service and provides campsites for $15-$20 per night. There are no hook-ups in this place but dump station is available. You can also enjoy the laundry area and showers for an extra fee. The campground allows a maximum of 2 vehicles, 6 people, and 3 tents per site.

Tip # 2 – Follow rules and guidelines

Camping is only allowed in areas designated as camping sites. If you violate this or any other camping guidelines of the park, you will be subjected to citation and/or fine.

Tip # 3 – Book in advance

It is better to book a reservation in advance as Grand Canyon is a very popular place for campers and it is filled up very easily.

Tip # 4 – Bring the right camping gear

Tent camping requires various camping equipment and accessories. Some of the most important things you need to bring are family camping tents, sleeping bags, lanterns, flashlights, camping stove, cooler, and so on.

Grand Canyon is not famous without a good reason. Camping here would be a great experience for you and your family. Sure enough, you will have a grand time during your vacation in this place.
